Apple Preps Apple TV Owners for March 21 Event

Apple has officially launched the app that will let you watch its March 21 event live on the Apple TV.

Those running the new Apple TV will find an “Apple Events” app is now available for download. The app is free and provides users the ability to watch the company’s March 21 event live from the comfort of their couch.

Apple launched its latest Apple TV last year. Unlike its predecessors, the latest-generation Apple TV is not just a streaming box. The device comes with built-in storage and a growing marketplace of both free and paid applications. It also comes with the ability for users to play games using an attachable controller.

Apple earlier this month announced that it was holding its special press event on March 21. The event, called “Let us loop you in,” is slated to kick off at 1 p.m. ET. Although Apple has been silent on what it will announce, rumors abound that Apple will announce a 4-inch iPhone that could be known as the iPhone SE, iPhone 5SE, or iPhone 6c.

In addition, Apple is expected to unveil a new, smaller version of its iPad Pro, as well as some new wristbands for Apple Watch. The company may also announce some software upgrades to its iOS mobile operating system and maybe even the tvOS platform running on Apple TV.

Apple has said it’s streaming the event live, but it’s not so easy for everyone to watch. Apple uses its own "HTTP Live Streaming" (HLS) technology to stream its show. Would-be viewers will need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later. On the Mac, users will be required to run Apple’s built-in Safari browser instead of a third-party alternative. In addition to the “Events” app on the new Apple TV, the company has an app that will automatically populate its older-generation set-top boxes.

On the Windows side, things are even more difficult for viewers. Apple says it will only stream its show to those running Windows 10 PCs. In addition, Windows 10 users will only be able to watch the show on Microsoft’s Edge browser.

For those with the latest Apple TV, Apple Events may be worth checking out, even if the owner doesn’t have time to watch the March 21 event. In addition to live programming, the Apple Events app also includes on-demand content, including past Apple keynotes. So, for those who want to relive Apple CEO Tim Cook talking about the iPad Pro or iPhone, Apple Events can handle it.
