To pass photos from a PC to an iPhone, it is not enough to connect the iPhone to your PC with the data cable. You need to install a program that allows synchronization between both devices. For this you can use iTunes. You can download it from here and install it on your PC.

After doing this, open the program. Connect your iPhone to the PC with the data cable. Select your iPhone on the Devices section (to the left of the iTunes interface).

On the top right, click the Photos tab (if this tab does not appear, enlarge the window).

Check the box next to Sync photos.

Then check the box next to Selected albums.

Select the folder where the photos are located (or previously create a folder and save the photos you want to transfer there).

Click the Apply button and wait while the synchronization takes place

Freeing up space on a cluttered iPhone can be extremely useful, and it makes sense to back up precious photos in case of data loss. In this guide we accomplish both aims by transferring photos from your iPhone to your PC using Windows Import Tool, Windows Explorer, iTunes or cloud storage.

I want to back up my photos on my computer. What's the best way to transfer photos from iPhone to PC?

A full iPhone is not fun; neither is losing precious photos in a data loss disaster. For these reasons, it makes sense to create a backup of your photos. Unlike Mac computers, Windows computers sometimes interact oddly with Apple products, and transferring photos from an iPhone to a PC can be slightly more difficult than the equivalent Mac operation.

But don't worry, because in this tutorial we look at how to copy photos from your iPhone on to any Windows computer, including ones running Windows 10, covering Windows Import Tool, Windows Explorer, iTunes, cloud storage and some third-party software tools.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC: Unlock your phone and install the drivers

First of all, you'll want to switch on your iPhone or get it off the lockscreen, as if the phone is locked with a passcode or fingerprint, your PC will not be able to see the photos on your iPhone. Once you connect your iPhone via USB to your computer (using a 30-pin or Lightning cable), your PC should pick up the device.

In order to give access to your PC to see the photos and videos taken on your iPhone you'll need to trust your PC via your iPhone. This is often presented by a pop-up on your iPhone which presents you with 'allow' and 'don't allow' options for your PC.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC

After picking Allow, you'll see Windows automatically installing the drivers for your iPhone; once complete, it will present you with a pop-up that allows you to import the pictures and videos using Windows or Windows Live Photo Gallery, and finally using Windows Explorer. If you're not presented with a pop-up auto-play window, go to My Computer or My PC to find your iPhone.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC: Windows Explorer

If you wish to quickly view your photos and extract them to your PC, you should select the option with Windows Explorer, as this will allow you to view all the photos on your device and extract individual images and videos (including screenshots) from your iPhone.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC

After selecting the Windows Explorer option, select Internal Storage, DCIM, and then within the DCIM folder you'll find the picture folder (which might be split into separate folders). Within the picture folder you'll be able to cycle through the iPhone's photos and videos (including screenshots). From here simply copy/cut and paste the photos to your desired location on your computer.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC: Windows Import Tool

There is also an alternative way which allows you to import all pictures and videos to your computer through Windows' import tool. This method will not allow you to choose which photos you want synchronised, but will allow you to sort the imports by various folder names and name the individual files by Tag or Original Name.

This method is useful if you wish to unload every photo from your iPhone to your computer, but we felt the Windows Explorer option presented us with more flexibility.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC: iTunes

There are other methods of transferring photos from your iPhone to your computer, one of which uses iTunes to back up and save photos to your computer.

Most of us have iTunes installed, which makes this an obvious method to use, but iTunes' limitations (and the difficulty some older PCs have running the program) mean it only really makes sense if you use iTunes regularly for other purposes. Read next: iTunes 12.2 review.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC: Cloud storage

The cloud is a fantastic way of backing up photos: you don't have to worry about any cables, as the whole process is done through the internet. This does cause a potential problem, though, as you'll need to be connected to the internet (hopefully via a Wi-Fi connection) and be constantly uploading photos to the cloud. If you're not on Wi-Fi, this will burn through a lot of data, and could end up being a costly solution.

No matter which company you choose to back up your photos to the cloud - Dropbox, iCloud, Google Photos - they all have limited amount of storage space unless you choose to upgrade to various different cloud-storage plans. Read more: How to use iCloud Drive for Mac.

How to transfer photos from iPhone to PC: Third-party software

Finally, there's also the option of using third-party software to help you transfer photos to your computer: AnyTrans and TunesGo Retro are among the many offerings out there which offer a comprehensive way of transferring your files from your iPhone to your computer.

These offer a variety of additional features but if you're just transferring photos and videos, Windows Explorer is a lot easier and cheaper.

You've made the brilliant decision to switch from iPhone to Android. Congratulations and welcome! Now you just need to get all of your contacts off your iPhone and onto your new Android phone and your Apple ties will be severed and you shall be reborn anew (or something like that).

Here's how!

You'll first want to make sure that your iPhone is backed up to iCloud. Once that's done, you're ready to make the move. You'll start by exporting your vCard.

How to export contacts using iCloud

  1. Launch your web browser on your computer. This process does NOT work with Chrome. Use Firefox or Safari.
  2. Navigate to iCloud.com.
  3. Sign in using your Apple ID and password.
  4. Click Contacts.
  5. Click All Contacts in the top left corner of your screen.

6. Press the Command key and the A key on your keyboard simultaneously if you have a Mac. Press the ctrl key and A key on your keyboard simultaneously if you have a PC.

7. Click the Settings button on the bottom left corner of your screen. It looks like a gear.

8. Click Export vCard. Your contacts will all be saved as a .vcf file in your downloads. If a new window pops up, you'll just have to select all of your contacts again, right click, and export again.

How to import contacts using Google Contacts

Next, you'll import your vCard using Google. If you don't have a Google account, sign up now, since you'll need a Google account for your Android phone. If you've already set up your Android phone, you likely set up a Google account in the process.

  1. Launch your web browser on your computer. Any web browser will work.
  2. Sign into your Google account.
  3. Click the Google apps button in the top right corner of your screen.
  4. Click Contacts.

5. Click Import Contacts on the bottom of the left menu.

6. Click Choose File.

7. Click your vCard and open it from your downloads or wherever you have saved it.

8. Click Import. All of your contacts should appear after a few seconds.

9. Click Find and merge duplicates if the red message appears at the top of your screen.

10. Click Merge in the pop-up. This isn't always entirely accurate, so double-check your contacts after for duplicates.

How to sync your Google account with your Android phone

You can sync your phone with your Google account, which can be done from any Android phone.

If you haven't turned your Android phone on yet, you're in luck; you'll be asked if you want to sync an account during setup. Just use the account that has your contacts and follow the on-screen prompts.

If you have turned on your Android phone and gone through the setup, here's how to sync your Google account to get your contacts on your phone.

  1. Launch the Settings app from your home screen, the Notification Shade, or the app drawer.
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Tap Google.

4. Tap the switch next to Contacts to make sure that contact sync is turned on if it's not already.

5. Tap the more button on the top right corner of your screen. It'll either be the word More or three vertical dots.

6. Tap Sync now.

How to add your iPhone contacts to your Android phone

You'll only want to email yourself your vCard if you don't have a Google account to sync with your Android phone. If you do have a Google account, your phone will inevitably sync with it and then you'll likely have duplicate contacts and it'll just be a mess.

  1. Launch your email app from your home screen or app drawer of your Android phone.
  2. Open the email containing your vCard file.
  3. Tap the download button next to the vCard file to download it.
  4. Swipe down from the top of your screen to reveal the Notification Shade.
  5. Tap the completed download notification to open the vCard file.

How to Transfer Music From iPod to iTunes

Even though Apple has made it as easy as legally possible to sync your iPod to your computer via iTunes, there comes a time – say when you format your hard drive or get a brand new machine – when your old iTunes library is no longer available and you are forced to wipe all your precious data from the iPod in order to sync it again.

Naturally, you would want to transfer the data from the music player back to your PC or Mac before erasing everything.

Note: If you used to sync your iPod to a Mac, you can only recover its contents on another Mac. There are no platforms restrictions for iPods that were synced to a Windows PC.
