iPhone With Triple-Lens Camera: Rumors Vs. Huawei P20 Pro

A report this week, albeit sketchy, points to exciting possibilities for future iPhones.

The subtext of the report about a future iPhone is basically accurate: it will pack a much-improved camera.

Reports: still too early

While a better camera is a given (obviously), the details from the Economic Daily News (via MacRumors) must be considered speculative (read: sketchy) at this point because rumors -- particularly those from the supply chain -- this early on are notoriously flakey. And the wording of the translation, that a supply chain source "will not rule out" this happening, sounds like simple conjecture.

The report claims that one of the new 2019 iPhones* will sport a 5x zoom (no other zoom specifics given), compared to the existing 2X on the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus. Also: there will be a third lens. But its function is a mystery and not explained in the report.

Pure guesswork but worth a serious look: Huawei P20 Pro

The Huawei P20 Pro -- cited in the Economic Daily News report -- is replete with an iPhone X-like notch and worth a serious look: if only to extrapolate and get an idea where high-end smartphones, including possibly future top-of-the-line iPhones are going.

The P20 Pro with a "Leica Triple Camera" is currently the highest-rated camera by DxOMark scoring a 109, beating the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, Google Pixel 2, and iPhone X, respectively. See DxOMark review.

(And See Forbes contributor Ben Sin's review here of the P20 to see what Huawei has accomplished with its "triple cameraand a clarification/explanation of the 40MP main camera.)

The 40MP main camera has an "unusually large" sensor (as DxOMark points out) about twice the size of the Samsung Galaxy S9’s. There's also a 20MP monochrome sensor. And Huawei has added a third lens: an 8MP telephoto.

There's also a 24MP front camera vs. 7MP on the iPhone X's TrueDepth camera.

And Huawei has upped the ante with a 3X optical zoom vs. 2X for the iPhone X.

In addition to impressive camera specs and camera performance, it's also worth noting that the P20 Pro has a 6.1 inch OLED display, which falls between the 5.8-inch iPhone X and rumored** 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus. The latter is also expected to have an OLED display. And, like Apple, the cheaper 5.8-inch P20 (minus the "Pro" moniker) uses an LCD display.

Huawei, like Apple, is also putting its considerable resources into AI. This is something Apple has to keep tabs on because Huawei is currently ranked No. 3 in global shipments behind Apple and Samsung, according to IDC. And it appears to be only getting bigger.

Of course a 2019 iPhone is still a long way off. Of more interest is what Apple has planned for its 2018 iPhones. Especially, the camera on the upcoming iPhone X Plus (or whatever Apple decides to call it).

*It's weird that the report is about a 2019 iPhone and not the upcoming 2018 iPhones. Supply chain rumors are really nothing but gossip at this stage if we are in fact talking about a 2019 iPhone and not 2018.

**A second report, based on a research note from UBS analysts Steven Milunovich and Benjamin Wilson (via BusinessInsider), says the priciest new 2018 iPhone could be $1,100, $100 more than the entry-level iPhone X.  If true, that could be a fit with the widely-rumored 6.5-inch (or 6.4-inch) "iPhone X Plus" that is expected to be slotted above a new version of the 5.8-inch iPhone X.
